Recipients of the award have overcome great adversity to achieve admirable accomplishments, to serve as examples of achieving the American Dream, and to offer countless hours and resources to help others in need.

“We are pleased to induct Frederic V. During his final year in the Army, Malek sold encyclopedias door-to-door to save money for his graduate degree from Harvard Business School.

In 1968, Malek and two business school friends bought Utica Tool Company. Malek also joined the Nixon administration as deputy under secretary of health, education and welfare. In 1970, he became special assistant to the president and head of White House personnel. In 1973, he served as deputy director of the Office of Management and Budget. He joined Marriott Corp., and during his tenure as president of Marriott Hotels, profits grew fivefold. Malek later served as director of the 1988 Republican Convention. During the next few years, Malek was Co-Chairman of CB Richard Ellis, President of Northwest Airlines, and served as the campaign manager of George H.W. Bush’s 1992 presidential campaign. Malek is the founder and chairman of Thayer Capital Partners and Thayer Lodging Group. Malek led the Finance efforts for John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign, and he is the current chairman of Governor McDonnell’s Commission to Reform and Restructure Government.
